Engaged employees are your best investment
Companies that invested in employee engagement weathered the economic storm better than their counterparts. During 2007 and 2008 many companies focused on engaging employees as a way of attracting and retaining top performing talent. Those same companies are having better results during our economic meltdown. The reasons for this are:
- Engaged employees are more productive. Under the accepted premise that employees fall into three categories: engaged, disengaged and actively disengaged. The engaged employee base, according to most studies, is 25 to 30 percent of the total employees in North America. While the disengaged are as high as 60 to 70 percent and the actively disengaged 10 to 20 percent.
- Convert this to return on investment and engaged employees are worth about $.90 on the dollar while disengaged . $.70, and actively disengaged, $.50. The actively disengaged are the employees that abuse time off, sick leave, benefits and the list goes on.
The natural tendency when companies start to lay off employees is for the existing employees to bunker down and hide. The worst-case scenario is they mentally quit but still show up for work every day, becoming more and more disengaged. The key during an economic slowdown is to ensure your existing employee bases are highly engaged. It is more important now than ever to have engaged staff. An engaged employee will work with the best interests of the company in mind while aligning his or her personal goals with the company's objectives. They are more supportive of management's decisions and will rally behind the cause.
This is not the time for a false sense of security around attraction and retention
Managers that overlook the importance of engagement by having a false sense of security around attracting and retaining key employees could suffer significant productivity losses. Engaged employees recommend your organization as a place to work and a place to do business. Engaged employees give higher levels of customer service while working better with their fellow employees. With aging demographics, our current employee abundance will be short lived. Many sectors like health care and government are experiencing significant employee shortages and they will continue to have challenges around attraction and succession planning. This is truly a time for organizations to regroup and position themselves for the future.
Creating the right strategy
Some of the key areas of focus for engaging your employee base and increasing productivity are:
- Communication:
With four generations in the workplace, it is critical communication is constant and uses methods unique to each generation. Lack of communication will create doubt and uncertainty and lead to an erosion of morale and engagement. Although communication is important during the good times, it is critical during the tough times. - Understanding your employees' strengths:
Engaged employees are employees that leverage their strengths at work. Getting to know what motivates your employees to achieve will allow you to get the most out of this precious resource. - Embrace diversity:
Understanding the unique characteristics of each employee will allow individuality and contribute to a more cohesive team. - Personal and corporate goal alignment:
Engaged employees are employees that have a clear line of sight between their objectives and that of the organization they work for. - Invest in your employees:
In many cases we will ask our employees to do more with less. By investing in your employees through training, mentoring and technology, you can help increase individual productivity. - Give constant feedback:
In the middle of all the stress and chaos, be sure to recognize the achievements of your team.
Making this the best time to achieve success
Anybody can lead an organization during the good times. The tough times are when the true leaders stand out. It is also an opportunity for organizations to prosper. Developing an engaged workforce will give any organization a competitive advantage. That competitive advantage can be in the marketplace or in creating a destination workplace. The great thing about building an engaged team is that the cost compared to the return is completely insignificant. Engagement becomes a way of thinking in an organization and a way of doing business follows.

Some additional information on employee engagement
For the first time in history, four generations of employees are working together. Obviously this new trend presents workplace challenges that up to this point were never considered. For companies to succeed, prosper and, in some cases, even to survive, management is now required to step up and understand as well as motivate each generation. With matures, baby boomers, Xers and millennials all working side by side, disputes can potentially arise through conflicts in values, vision, views and mindsets. Add to this the prospect of a shrinking workforce and it becomes increasingly clear that adaptive management is vital to a business's longevity and success.
Employee engagement has become one of the most popular buzzwords in business today and the percentage of disengaged employees in the workplace is staggering. During this time of aging demographics, shrinking workforce and increasing competition, improving employee engagement is one of the easiest ways to increase profitability and productivity.
Companies that equip their managers and employees with the proper tools, skills and knowledge to work in today's workplace will have a definite competitive advantage. The keys to improving employee engagement are:
- understanding the vision of the company and where each of its team members fits into that vision
- having the tools needed to motivate people to leverage their strengths
- knowing how to manage the team to work as a cohesive unit
- creating the proper habits to succeed
- overcoming employee fears
- managing their activities effectively
- handling conflict
